SuSE 10.1 had update problems from the start. You can do two things. either
run the YAST Online Upate first. (this loads the corrected update package) or
download and use the SuSE 10.1 "remastered" disk. These have the bugs fixed.
All this being said, SuSE 10.2 does seem to install, and update better.
