Just to throw my hat into the ring the default install for a distro like
Ubuntu everything is put into the root "/" partition. Which is fine for most
desktop installs. I have my /home on a separate drive so when I reinstall,
or upgrade i have all my home files on it's own drive. Although on my home
server I have "/" on one drive, /home, /etc and /var on another drive.
