Well...
Some more quite recent history.
Reinstalled Mandriva 2007.0 from the DVD I got
attached to a Linux magazine. Got it up and running in
about 30 minutes including the ndiswrapper route.
At this time I am not too concerned with NDISWRAPPER
not working. (Still not my main production
environment.)
Used Firefox in Mandriva to download the latest
Mandriva 2008.0. Just looking to see if there is a
good way to upgrade instead of reinstall as I just
don't have the time to possibly troubleshoot
differences between 2007 and 2008.
I must say I appreciate the assistance. Kind of
interesting that Firefox in MS Windows can't seem to
get a 700MB file but Firefox in Mandriva has no
problem. Did it in one shot, the MD5 checked out.
The compiz is also "default" in Mandriva 2008. The
soundcard issue is still that, an issue, why not in
Mandriva, but fine in Ubuntu (even just the Live CD).
I did get the upgrade apps to recognize the URLs.
The NTFS write issue is still there even for more
advanced experimenting. (Can't use my linux install
for too much production unless I have a way to acess
the data back and forth with MS Windows.)
I'm kind of leaning towards sticking with Mandriva
(mainly since it was cake getting the network up and
running on it) for now. But with more experience I may
choose otherwise.
Anyway, thank you for your suggestions. If I can get
some time free I hope to make it to a meeting.
Ron Knapper, still experimenting
