Is this a laptop or a desktop? An interesting thing that I noticed when I
thought I had no sound on my Dell D600 laptop in Linux a while back was that
depending on what distro I used, sometimes the sound would come out of the
speakers plugged into the docking station, and sometimes it would only come
out of the headphone jack (regardless of whether there was something plugged
into the headphone jack). So, it was working out of the speakers on the dock
in Ubuntu and then I switched to Fedora and suddenly I had no sound. Then I
plugged my speakers into the headphone port directly on the laptop and they
worked. So, maybe if you have multiple sound devices as detected by Linux
(an onboard and a PCI card, for example, or an onboard and one on a docking
station for a laptop) then the default one might not be the one that you
have your headphones or speakers plugged into.
