well this is the same thing that goes wrong for many its a bad headphone
jack sensor or a reversed sensor for internal and external  etc etc theres a
mixer option called external amp ( also can have badly named interface ..)
..... check that and sound would play through speakers uncheck to listen
through headphones .... my new dell laptop did something a lil different it
would always play from speakers even with headphones pluged in to fix this i
had to install newer alsa libs and drivers this also made my stereo mics
work too , though sometimes certain options have to be passed to the module
concerning your sound card check the alsa homepage for the sound card you
have.
