[QCLUG] Problems Installing Software

One more questions - Only one, I promise.
This would be a "Dumb Question" except I don't know the answer and the 
only dumb question is the one you already know the answer to.

Does it make a difference where I put the downloaded file and "install" 
it from. I'm an organization FREAK and would normally put my downloaded 
files in /home/robert/download/install/{program name} .  Is this as good 
as other places or should I put it somewhere else to install it? If so, 
where?
