{snippage} Stuff regarding Mythbox presentation
Now here is kind of what we have going on at the IT Showcase
Booths and presentations will be throughout the day 8am-6pm, 6pm-10pm
will primarily be for the gaming competitions. We are currently
planning on having a couple dozens booths which will be an assortment of
vendors, and technology related randomness.
{more snippage} More Mythbox stuff
If you know of anyone
else that would like to join that would like to talk about linux/open
source software feel free. I would really like to see OSS hyped a
little since most are not familiar with the software alternatives that
are available. Preferably I would like to get atleast 2 people from the
Lug group to be at the table so that you will have a chance to check out
the other vendors and exhibits during the showcase.
Ok, here is the meat - Derek would like at least two others to show up,
so we can show off our various interests/abilities in our daily use of
Linux. Given that the Fest day is the 19th, it would be great if we could
have people who can come in for part or all day to commit by the 16th, as
this gives Derek a few days to get our table setup according to his needs.
I plan on being there all day, to do the Mythbox presentations, and to
poke around the other displays a bit.
Whomever would be free for either part of the day, or the whole day,
please post to the list, or email to derek.kozlowski@gmail.com so he can
have the info by the 16th!
In addition to the LUG booth I am anticipating on conducting 1 or 2
mythbuntu presentation sessions throughout the day that you talk about the
mythbuntu system, explain what it is and what it does and demonstrate the
interface. This will be similar to whats going on at the booth, but it
will be a scheduled time so people can see the entire presentation instead
of just walking up randomly and asking questions about the system.
Presentation slots start each hour, we anticipate each to last 20min to
half an hour, but left gaps so that they can run over if needed or there
are any questions. If you have preferred times I can try to get those
scheduled.
This would be a great chance for Mark, Zach, Steve, (if he is in the
area) and others to show off how Linux is used in daily work environments,
or to show off stuff that you have done with your setup that other people
might be interested in doing at home. I know that Jim won't be free due to
prior commitments, but I am sure that someone would be able to come in for
at least part of the day.
Below is more information about the goings on:
Little more info about the event
*Computer Club* - The St. Ambrose Computer club is interested in also
doing some linux related demonstrations. They will have a both setup
with a few computers running a variety of live boot distros in
virtualization. I believe they are planning to use vmware to show off
virtualization technologies in addition to the flexibility of a live
boot operating system. They plan to have a fairly hands on stations
setup where people can play around with applications and system settings
without worrying about breaking the system (just need to reboot to get
it all back together). They will probably be showing off some of the
linux features like package managers and basic applications. I believe
their stuff should highly complement your mythbox.
Noah, if you are free during this day, here would be a good chance to
show off some of the stuff that you have been doing with your laptops!
*Prizes* - Last year we gave away nearly $3000 worth of prizes and
goodies donated by the vendors including a computer. I am not sure how
far we are this year, things are still coming in at a steady stream.
What we did last year is put together baskets of goodies and each table
had basket that people could sign up for. There will also be 1 or 2 big
things that people can win by visiting all the booths (and getting their
card stamped) and turned in. There was also random giveaways for
attending presentations and submitting a survey before leaving. In
addition individual vendors often bring things to give away such as
pens, shirts, frisbees, and other logoed goods.
The bad news is that only staff/students/faculty will be able to register
for any of the prizes. They will still be able to get goodies from the
presentations and freebies brought by the vendors.
So, we can't win prizes, which is only fair, but we do get to collect
schwag if we like :)
*Vendors* - A few of the Vendors and Orgs exhibiting include Adobe,
Apple, CDWG, Dell, HP, Pratt AV, Verizon, Art Dept, Computer Club, LUG,
Assistive Technologies. Our Department is also putting together booths
for certain on campus technologies (Beeline, Blackboard, ServiceDesk,
Pod Casting, Elluminate (Interactive online classes), Vista & Office, etc.
As soon as I hear back from you I will send an update to the mailing list.
Thank You,
- Derek
