I would like to use Kubuntu 8.10 but Firefox crashes so often it makes it unusable. It seems like if I am in the Bookmarks and move the cursor even a little fast Firefox crashes. Bummer Anyone else having this problem? If so, have you figured out a way to keep it from happening? Thanks Bob Jones From derek.kozlowski@gmail.com Mon Mar 2 03:52:21 2009 From: derek.kozlowski@gmail.com (Derek Kozlowski) Date: Sun, 1 Mar 2009 21:52:21 -0600 Subject: [QCLUG] St. Ambrose IT Showcase Message-ID: LUG Community, I am contacting the group once again to invite the Linux Users Group to organize a booth at the upcoming 3rd annual Technology Showcase on Thursday, March 19th at St. Ambrose University. We use this as a chance to show off upcoming technologies as well as educate our users to the resources that are available. Last year we had a substantial showing of support from vendors who have participated by setting up booths, presenting, and donating swag and products for giveaways. I thank all of you that participated last year and was impressed by the number of individuals that commented about the Linux booth on the exit survey. We are adding a few new participants this year including Microsoft, ECS, KALA (St. Ambrose Radio), and the SAU student chapter of IEEE. In addition to the Mac and Linux User Groups, previous exhibitors have included Apple, Pratt, Cisco, Dell, CDW, Video Games etc, Verizon and Valcom. Individual groups on campus have also used the yearly showcase as a way to demonstrate innovative usages of technology. Industrial Engineering (Robotics), Graphic Design, Computer Club (Virtualization + Open Source Software), Ocupational Therapy (Control Systems), and Music. So what I am looking for is representation of the local Linux enthusiasts. I am interested in getting a demo area setup where Showcase visitors can stop by to see the free alternative to MS/Apple. Most visitors probably have never heard of Linux so I am sure many will be surprised to see how simple and fun Linux can be to use. In addition to the demo systems (various distros, kde, gnome, compiz, etc), I would love to see some knowledgeable LUG members that would be willing to demonstrate the systems, tools, applications, package management, and answer any questions that they may have. In addition to the daily computer applications I am also interested in showing off 1 or 2 interesting projects that show the flexibility of a free operating system. If anyone is interested in getting involved or knows of other groups companies that would like to contribute to the showcase feel free to send me a message or post back to the group mailings. Questions or Comments? Thanks, - Derek Derek Kozlowski Information Technology St. Ambrose University From Robert@RM-Jones.com Mon Mar 2 14:28:17 2009 From: Robert@RM-Jones.com (Robert Jones) Date: Mon, 02 Mar 2009 08:28:17 -0600 Subject: [QCLUG] St. Ambrose IT Showcase In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <49ABED01.7050303@RM-Jones.com> If the QCLUG decides to setup a booth at the "Showcase" I am available if needed. Like last year I can be a "gofer" or whatever you need. If the group wants me there, let me know soon and how many CD's you think we need and I can get some burned. I have Ubuntu and Kubuntu 8.10 and can download whatever else you think we should have available. If I get them burned before the "Showcase" we can enjoy ourselves a little more than the rush of last year. I don't remember how many we did last year but I'm open to burning about 75 to 100 if you think we need that many. No labels though. That is to expensive. I will most likely bring my 'main' box, as my Mythbox has been reduced to near-useless by the Mythbuntu software. I have now tried two other distros besides Mythbuntu 8.10, and have reached the conclusion that something is seriously borked with Myth-anything presently. If anyone comes across an ISO or disc containing the amd64 image of Mythbuntu 7.04 or 7.10, I would appreciate it, as that software was the last version where things pretty much worked. Sadly, it is no longer on the mirror servers, as it is no longer supported. I figure that I can show off what an average joe does with Ubuntu on my main box, which may be of interest. Bob - in the case of burning cds, I wouldn't burn more than 25 or so, as in April there will be a new version. If you are thinking of doing more than 25, I would probably do 8.04 discs, as this is the latest LTS version. Any other ideas/suggestions? I don't think I will make any of 8.04 LTS since these are show and tell disk so we might as well provide the latest version. At this time I have no plans to make copies of anything besides Ubuntu and Kubuntu so if anyone wants something else available to give away please make some copies. Mark, Do you remember about how many copies we burned last year? If anyone thinks we need more than these 50 CD's please let me know so I can make them and take them with me. Much faster on my desktop box. I will bring some blanks along just in case. I don't have any CD sleeves so if anyone wants to put them in sleeves and has some laying around we could put them to use. Before the date, I'll need a reminder of which building and parking lot to use. Thanks. Thanks to a man named Rambo T. I found a great way to do it using Synaptic Package Manager. If you haven't tried this you may want to take a look at the Blog I wrote about it http://www.linux-and-more.com/2009/03/13/ubuntu-810-re-installing-programs-the-easy-way-using-synaptic/ and I have tried the procedure a number of times. Conficker doesn't do any of that. In fact, it doesn't do much of anything right now short of infecting other computers. Tomorrow (April 1st), it is set to update itself from an internet site, not infect more new people. We have already passed 3 of these "upgrade" dates and nothing big happened. So lets review: We have already had 3-4 other "April 1st's" already, and we are still here The worm DOES NOT HAVE A PAYLOAD (no code other than infecting other computers). Although an upgrade could change that This means no stealing bank accounts or sending spam yet. Most major AV's will detect it if it is up to date. Malwarebytes, Norton, McAfee, AVG, Clamwin, Kapersky, and Avast, to name a few. A much better article about the "meltdown": http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/032709-fears-of-a-conficker-meltdown.= html If you do know someone infected, let me save you PCS's $130 fee: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=3D2009-011316-0= 247-99 (Downadup is another name for conficker) On Tue, Mar 31, 2009 at 2:37 AM, DMichael Burns wrote: > Not to give a plug to them, but the video is here: > http://www.myfoxqc.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=3D8391040&versio= n=3D1&locale=3DEN-US&layoutCode=3DVSTY&pageId=3D1.1.1 > > I love how they said that every computer is at risk.=A0 Hello...McFly... > > On Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 9:05 PM, Arron Lorenz wro= te: >> >> I hope no one did have to see this, but tonight the first story on fox 1= 8 >> news, was basically a really scary story about this dumb computer virus >> going around.
