Showcase<BR></FONT><BR></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Hello Everyone,</DIV>
<DIV>I am Derek, a member of the IT staff here at St. Ambrose =
University.
I have been watching the mailing list for some time but have not yet had =
the
opportunity to make it to the meetings at Panera. I have a request =
to make
of the group. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>On Wednesday, March 19th the Information Technology Department is
organizing our annual Technology Showcase. We use this as a chance =
to show
off upcoming technologies as well as educate our users to the resources =
that are
available. Last year we had a substantial showing of support =
from
vendors who have participated by setting up booths, presenting, and =
donating
swag and products for giveaways. This year we are expanding the =
event to
really show off what technology can do.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Last years survey showed that the two biggest hits at the showcase =
included
our Vista/Office 2007 demonstration area and an Apple representatives
station. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>So what I am looking for is representation of the local linux
enthusiasts. I am interested in getting a demo area setup where =
Showcase
visitors can stop by to see the free alternative to MS/Apple. Most =
visitors probably have never heard of linux so I am sure many will be =
surprised
to see how simple and fun linux can be to use. In addition to the =
demo
systems (various distros, kde, gnome, compiz, etc), I would love to see =
some
knowledgeable LUG members that would be willing to demonstrate the =
systems,
tools, applications, package mangagment, and answer any questions =
that they
may have. In addition to the daily computer applications I am also =
interested in showing off 1 or 2 interesting projects that show the =
flexibility
of a free operating system. One possibility is the Myth setup that =
was
demoed at your last meeting.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Is there anyone in the group willing to work with me =
to introduce
linux to our community. I am not really looking at this as a =
recruitment
event per se. But I think it would be a great oportunity to =
demonstrate
the freedom of open source software.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I am also looking for guest speakers to attend the event or even to =
present
remotely. I am looking to find someone that can discuss more of =
the
philosophy and background of linux. To explain to a broad audience =
about
the importance of Open Source software and distributed =
development. Is
anyone interested in putting something together or have contacts in the
community that would be willing to present on campus for the =
event?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Questions or Comments?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Thanks,</DIV>
<DIV>- Derek</DIV></BODY></HTML>
