What's your price point and would you prefer HD based or flash based? Keep in mind that flash consumes less power and often is much smaller and will play longer, but maxes out around 8GB. Where as HD based is a bit slower to startup, and slightly bulkier but maxes (normally) at around 80GB and the price per GB is MUCH less with HD based.

Flash based is almost always UMS (will mount as a usb drive to any OS). HD based is probably about 70/30 MTP based vs UMS based (in the US). You want UMS based as MTP devices are very often only desiged to work in Windows or with WMP. Again keep in mind if you have any DRM music (iTunes, napster, yahoo...), you would have to go the MTP based route, but as you're asking about a player that works with linux I'll assume that isn't the case.

iRiver has some very solid UMS based models, however some are MTP only so be careful. I'd check their site first before buying (look at the firmware downloads under support for UMS firmware). The iRiver h300 has UMS firmware for nearly every country except the US. So if you bought it here it would be MTP, however I've heard that a lot have people have flashed it with the UK or Korea firmware and it runs UMS just fine.
